The child
A child cannot always put into words what they are going through. Sometimes they say it through the body, through play, through behaviour.
Children go through changes they did not choose and have no say in: a new brother or sister, a move, an illness in the family, parents who separate, a loss. What cannot be said shows itself through restless sleep, tummy aches, meltdowns, withdrawal, school marks that suddenly drop or, on the contrary, through excessive good behaviour.
Working with a child begins with the parents. Together we try to understand what is going on and decide whether meetings with the child, meetings with the parents or both will help most.
Areas of work
The child who “shouts” and the child who “is fine”
In a family organised around an emergency, there is almost always one child who “shouts” and one of whom people say they “are fine”. They ask for nothing, cause no trouble, help out. This is the child who understood early on that the parents cannot carry one more worry. Counselling offers them a space in which they can say what is hard for them to say at home.
Changes in the family
The birth of a sibling, a move, the parents' divorce, the illness or death of someone close. Children sense changes before anyone explains them, and the adults' silence leaves them to explain the changes to themselves, sometimes in ways that hurt them more than they let show. Divorce → · Grief and loss →
Fear, anger, sadness
Tantrums, fears that do not go away, sadness with no visible reason. In children, emotions often pass through the body and through behaviour before they find words. For a child, play and drawing are the natural way of saying what cannot be said in words.
School and other children
Difficulty settling in, exclusion, bullying, refusing to go to school. We work both with the child's experience and with the parent's position in relation to it. Sometimes, behind difficulties at school, there may be a neurodivergent child or a gifted child. Neurodivergence → · Giftedness →
The child with a chronic illness
When an illness demands constant monitoring, the child also needs a place in which to be more than a patient, where the fact that their life is different can be understood, grieved and accepted. Type 1 diabetes →
The parents
Guilt, exhaustion, disagreement between parents about what is “too much” or “too little”. Sometimes the most useful thing for a child is for their parents to be listened to themselves. Winnicott spoke of the “good enough” parent: not perfect, but present, able to make mistakes and to repair them.
